Nutserts, also known as rivet nuts, are permanent nuts that can be inserted into existing or new holes. These inserts are only used on fairly thin metal, up to about 10ga max. After that thickness you would typically tap a hole, or use a weld nut.
Once rivet nuts are placed in a hole, they are compressed with a tool and become permanent.
They are ideal when the material is too thin or brittle to support a bolt on its own. Nutserts provide a relatively strong and reliable thread in many applications. They come in a range of sizes, lengths, and grip ranges.
Amazon carries a huge assortment of manual nutcert tools as well as pneumatic nutcert tools. Harbor Freight also carries a 10 in. Nut Setter, though I don’t think it’s as good of a deal.
You can pick up packages of 100 Rivnuts for $10-15 in a variety of common sizes on Amazon as well.
Here is a video demonstrating how to use a manual rivnut tool to properly insert them.
