Metal Gauges and their Decimal Thickness Counterparts

If you’ve ever been confused when people talk about “gauges” of thickness in metals, you’re not alone! The concept of using gauge numbers to denote metal thickness evolved from early manufacturing practices in the 1800’s where physical templates were used to quickly check metal dimensions. I have no idea why we haven’t abandoned those standards in favor of just adopting Imperial or Metric measurements for thickness, but its no use fighting it. So, if you’re ever needing to know what the actual thickness is for 4ga steel, or 18ga aluminum, here’s a handy chart for reference. (Printable PDF also attached.)
